The University of Zadar secured helping equipment for students with disabilities which was obtained through the participation of the Student Counselling Centre in two international projects : DUCAS “Developing university counselling and advisory services” and EduQuality “Education for Equal Opportunities at Croatian Universities“ .

A speech synthesizer

Since it is almost unimaginable not to have access to the computer nowadays, a speech synthesizer enables to the blind or visually impaired to work on the computer or surf the internet. It is a combination of hardware and software: besides the computer, the JAWS programme turns to a sound, i.e. reads the location of the cursor (for example the name of the icon you have chosen or an option on the current menu), the text you are typing or have already typed. A special piece of equipment generates the sound similar to human speech that is adjusted to the phonology of a language. Without it, the sound would be quite „robotic“.

Electronic hand magnifier

An electronic hand magnifier is a device intended for multifunctional usage by the visually impaired, but also for any situation where a quick magnification and visual display are needed. The electronic magnifier OptelecClearNote+ magnifies and adjusts the image to certain sight impairments (a magnified image, high contrast, black and white, colour shift). The device can be connected to a computer or an LCD projector. Very intuitive and easy to use, it is adapted for a fast shift to the magnified display of the aimed part of a book or other printed material.

The Braille Notetaker

The Braille Notetaker HumanwareBraille Note Apex 18 BT is a device with Braille input and output options – it has a special keyboard for the input of Braille letters, and the option to print the Braille text. The device has multiple formats of input-output interfaces (VGA, USB, sound) and its primary purpose is to offer support to a blind person. The device may be used independently or in combination with a computer, printer, smartphone devices or a tablet.
